The House of Bread began on February 4, 1980 with a mission to alleviate hunger among indigents, transients and low-income people in the north Hartford area.

The Soup Kitchen now serves approximately 300 to 400 meals daily.

The House of Bread has expanded feeding services to include four Kids Café sites (Asylum Hill Boys and Girls Club, South West-Chandler Street Boys and Girls Club, Northwest Boys and Girls Club and Wilson-Gray YMCA). We serve approximately 600 kids ranging in age from six to twelve, a nutritious and balanced meal each evening. Volunteers are a very important component of the soup kitchen operation.
